Our Office

It all begins with an idea. When Auburndale Builders needed a new office, we created the first Passive House-certified commercial retrofit in Newton.

Completed in 2017, this Passive House commercial retrofit project was the first of its kind in Newton, MA. Auburndale Builders took a dilapidated three car cement block garage and transformed it into their offices. It’s certified by PHIUS as a Source Zero building (it produces as much energy as it consumes) thanks to a photovoltaic array that doubles as an overhang to shade the mid-summer sun. Efficient mechanical ventilation provides continuous fresh air to the offices and classroom space.

Building-Science-class

The Studio for High-Performance Design and Construction (StudioHPDC) occupies one end of the newly renovated Auburndale Builders office. The Studio is a classroom and educational center for sustainable design and construction where builders, homeowners and developers come together to learn about high performance buildings. StudioHPDC develops and hosts training courses for people of all levels, from introductory sessions to hands-on workshops and certification programs.
